Planted and now naturalising and, even worse forming hybrid swarms with the hokotaka (Corokia macrocarpa).

A few shrubs and seedlings noted as well as hybrids between C. ×virgata and C . macrocarpa i.e. C. macrocarpa × C. ×virgata (C. buddelioides × C. cotoneaster) .

Common shrub to small tree on eroding Papa mudstone cliffs and reverting farmland. Shrubs and trees up to 8 m tall, Branches spindly, erect, sometimes pendulous, leaves glaucescent, flowers 15-20 mm diameter, mostly white (sometimes tinged pink).

Uncommon. Occasional shrubs and trees up to 8 m tall growing on sides of limestone canyon leading to natural bridge. Specimens infected with Austropuccinia psidii - see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/104840834

Plant was found in on a partially shaded stream bank. Plants formed thickets around 1.5 m - 2 m tall. Pink-flowered variant also in this area. Flowers were purple, stems and leaves were fragrant when crushed.

Ayton Reserve. On a hilly area. Abundant number of seedlings underneath a mature tree. The parent tree is flowering heavily.

Many weeds nearby like tradescantia fluninensis. Tibouchina urvilleana, Fuchsia boliviana, Passiflora spp.

Specimens caught my eye because they have white rather than yellow coloured ray florets. Not seen that before. This colour variant grew with the more usual yellow-flowered race.

Common along roadside on papa mudstone and associated colluvium / alluvium. Shrubs to small trees up to 6 m tall; branches spindly, leaves patent, grey-green (not seen in in these images as camera doesn't captrure that colour well); flowers 15-20 mm diameter, mostly white sometimes with a faint central pink tinge / blush.

Occasional plants noted with peltate leaves but also with dark maroon petioles - so blurring the distinction between subsp. excelsum (dark maroon petioles but cordate leaves) and subsp. peltatum (green petioles and some peltate leaves).

Pennantia baylisiana x P. corymbosa (known also as P. 'Otari Debut').

One of the more bizarre plantings on the island. A single tree growing in old orchard. Obviously a recent planting on the island as this hybrid (which first appeared spontaneously near the parent species at Otari Native Plant Gardens, Wilton, Otari) has only been known about since the late 1980s.
