Description
The common name can be misleading, as this animal is not an Ant, but the wingless female of a species of solitary parasitic Wasp. Its behaviour is unusual for Tiphiid, as it exclusively hunts Mole Crickets, as opposed to Beetle larvae.

I think the species is right, but, as always, open to correction. This wasp was quite large and checking out holes in the gravel/clay bank.

One of two mated pair in the saddle of a well rotted cottonwood. Signs near this section of the boardwalk indicated that they have finally given birth and are nesting. An observation later in the day is of the larger paired member on the other side of the rotted saddle of this same cottonwood perch tree.
