While ascending Mt Oxford 18 months ago we encountered a beech tree that appears to be deciduous and the leaf shape doesn't match any of the NZ species, as far as I know. I don't think it was planted there. Didn't see any others in the vicinity, but it was very close to the track, so perhaps it was planted.
