This is what iNat suggested I would appreciate a more detailed Id if possible as there is only one other observation in the South Island on here that I'm aware of.
Size was 35 to 40mm long it was beautiful with golden shining to it. It was by itself approx 70m from high tide mark in knee deep, near the bank, in fast flowing clear fresh water in a sandy river and was shuffling the sand around.
The area in is near Marahau estuary surrounded by Wetlands.
Short video here
Please be patience it kept moving every time the camera finally focused but you can see it clearly at the end.
Initially noticed this swimming with a school of Glass gobies (circled in pic 6.) It then dropped down to the sand.
Now this was a bit of a surprise.
Swam out when I lifted a rock. It then tucked into a space nearby. Very weird things. Habitat shot last. That's the spot he was in before I flipped the rock.
~4cm long
Lower intertidal.
Help, I cant figure this fish out.
Amazing colours on this one. in a cave

Living on subtidal rock wall in an overhang.
This was a surprise. Two shy individuals within a rock. One larger than the other.
Tasmanian blenny?
I estimate ~5cm long
~1.5m depth
I just found this little guy in some GoPro rockpool photos. It hung around and showed interest in the food I had dropped in for the triplefins but it's not clear whether it ate any. The photos are heavily cropped.
Found this in Pataua estuary in half a meter of water an hour or so before high tide. It was initially half buried in sand until disturbed. Initially thought it could be a juvenile Allomycterus pilatus. But it does look visually similar to Torquigener altipinnis which is apparently not known from mainland NZ. Happy to say I have no idea.
@clinton think this one's for you?
