“We responded to a report of a large dead fish at Twin Bridges on the mid-Brisbane River today to find an 810mm long endangered Mary River Cod dead.
Being the only dead fish, it is highly likely this endangered Mary cod was caught & poorly handled before release.
Large Cod do not handle being lifted from the water. Internal injuries are a common result; even if released these injuries can cause a slow, painful death in the days after capture. 😞
Please, if you catch a cod; remove the hooks while the fish is in the water and don’t lift it for a photo. These Mary River Cod are endangered - this is one less breeder in the wild.
