On the sawed-off end of a log that had fallen across the trail, I pulled some bark off and found these odd diplopods and an insect.
I'm calling this a Platydesmus sp. due to similar photographs on Rowland Shelley's website

Observed in the Drill Ranch by Pandrillus in Boki
An entomologist advised that is easier to ID the culprits by first IDing the plant which would take an actual photo of a healthy leaf and flower. Unfortunately, this is the last photo I took before the tip.

It does not show up well in the picture, but up close, I saw the markings: black bar from front of dorsal to behind pectoral fins, forming a sideways "T" with the row of dots extending to the tail, and the pectoral fins distinctively black with pale rays.

Niihau is a secretive island, but there is a way to get there. Niihau Helicopters (http://www.niihau.us/heli.html) will not take you to the village, or even fly over it, but they will show you the uninhabited parts of the island, and then land for a couple of hours at a remote beach. The time I was there, it was Nanina Beach, on the north end -- although my map location is just a best guess, because Google Maps knows little about Niihau.
