This Margined Leatherwing (Chauliognathus marginatus) is exhibiting the fuzzy white patches of an infection of the entomopathogenic fungus Eryniopsis lampyridarum, which apparently infects only this genus of soldier beetles.

I am looking for an ID. I think these are leaf beetle larvae. It looks as though these larvae are protecting themselves by piling their feces on their backs like tortoise beetles. Although, these cant be tortoise beetles, can they? Anyone have any ideas? The plant is common milkweed, asclepias syriaca. Thanks.
