Corticolous on matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia)

Corticolous. Thallus loosely adnate to substrate, greenish-grey when fresh, with prominent marginal dactyls (these not as well developed in this example as they can be); upper thallus surface conspicuously areolate, areolae flaking off to expose white medulla; under side margins with prominent naked (devoid of rhizines / cilia) pale brown band.

Chemistry: Cortex K+ yellow, medulla K+ yellow - red, C-, KC+ red.

Description

Common on exposed, windswept branches of pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa). Associated with Usnea rubicunda, U. sp., Pannaria fulvescens, P. elixii, Crocodia poculifera, Frullania fugax, F. aff. rostrata and Graphis elegans.

Probably D. sericeum (certainly sensu Galloway 2007).Rosette-forming, thallus 150 mm diameter, rather dense, spreading, spongy, and cushion-like, though much cracked, dark malachite green when moist, brown-green when dry (as shown here), hymenia on the thallus undersides near the apices, whitish-cream when moist.

Description

Common. Corticolous on rawirinui (Kunzea robusta). This is the most common Notoparmelia in the Auckland Region.

Thallus dull-grey, upper surface deeply fissured, covered in prominent pseudocyphellae, central lamina covered in masses of coarse, isidiate soredia. Chemical Spot Tests: Cortex K+ yellow, medulla K+ yellow rapidly turning dark red, C-.

Description

Common. Foliicolous on the leaves of taraire (Beilschmiedia tarairi). Associated with Strigula sp. (an undetermined entity with a circular thallus bearing numerous pycnidia (forming a dark centre to the thallus) and with a 'smooth' thallus margin), S. orbicularis, S. novae-zelandiae and S. smaragdula.

Uncommon - noted once corticolous on nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida). Growing admixed with Pseudocyphellaria chloroleuca.

Upper thallus surface without isidia, soredia, pseudocyphellae or phyllidia; otherwise lobule margins tomentose, apothecia orange-red. Underside uniformly white without cyphellae or pseudocyphellae.

Description

Local - occasional plants noted in open gumland scrub. Plants erect 50-120 mm tall - all juveniles at this site. Associated with Pimelea xenica and P. prostrata.

Locally common along banks and amongst boulders (Waitemata Group Formation) within tidal portion of creek.

Associated with Triglochin striata, Isolepis cernua and Apium aff. prostratum ("slender" / "white denticles").

This population, well known to local botanists is probably the largest one in the Auckland Region.

Description

Corticolous on rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum). Branching sympodial; phyllidia absent, sorediate. Lower surface mostly white but with sparse, minute patches of violet and yellow pigmentation. Rhizines violet. Fits the Galloway (2007) concept of this species. Hwoever, New Zealand Heterodermia casarettiana does not look the same as the lichen referred to by that name on the Kermadec Islands and in Australia.

I think this is right - however I need fertile material to be sure. Growing with the nearly dried off remnants of Riccia crystallina (a common Riccia seen in Auckland only during the winter months) and Lunularia cruciata (a weedy species in urban Auckland). Thalli appeared in the last few weeks.

Riccia crozalsii is supposed to be 'common' in urban Auckland and on Rangitoto Island - but this is the first possible record of it I have seen (ironically in my own back yard) despite looking carefully for it.

Description

This was a represenative of the Northern most population I spotted during a coastal survey. On a bank above the ocean near the edge as shown in last pic. P. carnosa is known from this greater area, I am happy that the plants in this area are that species, due to hairy stems and red petioles. If anyone thinks differently please advise.

Description

More probably Pimelea carnosa x P. sporadica but growth habit incorrect for P. sporadica and in the general area P. sporadica and P. carnosa 'type' plants were common. Toward the base of the Surville Cliffs Pimelea sporadica can be found growing with P. urvilleana (subsp. urvilleana if you accept subsp. nesica as distinct) and P. carnosa but here the distinction is often unclear - probably because of hybridism between all three taxa.

Voucher collected and will be lodged in AK.

Description

Possibly - tentative determination by Dr Robert Luecking "S. kelica" - I will need to check spores etc.

Thallus silivery white but without obvious prothallus. Thallus covered in sorediate / pruinose orange-yellow pustules (pycnidia?). These structures K+ violet rapidly changed to black.

Common on pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) in extremely dry situations - associated with Calicium tricolor and Chrysothrix xanthina.

Uncommon. Corticolous on exposed branches of mahoe (Melicytus ramiflorus subsp. ramiflorus). Associated with Parmotrema reticulatum.

Thallus greenish grey when fresh, upper surface finely isidiate, isidia simple, not ciliate, thallus margins sparsely ciliate; underside with narrow bare to sparsely ciliate brown margin.

Description

Foliicolous on porokaiwhiri (Hedycarya arborea) leaves ('host' tree growing above Kaipatiki Stream in a sheltered but sunny situation.

Growing with Siphonolejeunea nudipes (sterile so cannot determine which variety - see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/5000702), Calopadia sp., Physcia adscendens, depauperate Parmeliaceae, and other as yet undetermined foliicolous lichens.

Keys to this species using the revised Lichen Flora of Galloway (2007) but this species is not supposed to be foliicolous and as you will note the thallus is somewhat atypical for this species when compared to how it looks on rocks and bark.
Thallus with convex lobes and trucnate apices, soralia laminal, crateriform, lower thallus surface white, with white rhizines. Cortex and medulla K+ yellow

Description

Saxicolous on sandstone outcrop just above beach. Associated with Buellia cranwelliae (see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/4926524). Thallus white when fresh.

Identification made by Dr John (Jack) Elix at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia using herbarium specimens sent to him for his revision of Buellioid lichens.

This is Rinodinella fertilis var. fertilis.
