Not great with these in the field, without a Flora to hand so this identification is possibly wrong. Ornithopus certainly but species?

Closest to O. pinnatus but leaves very hairy - not what I usually associate with New Zealand examples of O. pinnatus.

Single plant - stems decumbent, forming a circular patch c.0.30 m diameter, leaves deeply lyrate-pinnatifid, sometimes cut almost to midrib, inflorescences sparse, flowers mostly unopened, those few seen pale blue to pinkish blue. Growing alongside typical P. vulgaris - plants of which had a smaller more erect growth habit, entire to shallowly toothed leaves (not lyrate-pinnatifid), copious inflorescences and dark blue flowers. Prunella xintermedia has been sparingly recorded from New Zealand (as P. xhybrida) - though this is the first time I have ever seen it. No Prunella laciniata was evident in the area but it is locally present in the Auckland Region, and despite its cream-coloured flowers very easily overlooked.

See http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/8651671 for an observation of the same plant.

This is Fimbristylis velata R.Br. which is not on Nature Watch NZ and is missing from the 'external providers'

It is the name we are using in New Zealand for the species that had been called here F. squarrosa Vahl

(see http://nzflora.landcareresearch.co.nz/default.aspx?selected=NameDetails&TabNum=0&NameId=32D1F496-8F28-4DC7-BDB8-33C0BDB6D0F6 and http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=257).

The images are pretty poor but they fill a gap and I have none better. The two shockers are mine and the goodish one is by the late Sir John Smith-Dodsworth (taken from the same site on the same day) who allowed me to use his images.

Fimbristylis was once regarded as seriously threatened in New Zealand till a chance discovery (kid you not) by my feelow Earth Science student colleagues and I in the former Garden Bar of the Hillcrest Tavern, Hamilton lead me to realise it was a locally common, 'weedy' species of the Waikato River Banks, associated non-peat lakes and also parts of Northland. A strict annual it appears about mid December and reaches its peak in February before drying off by late March. Its preferred habitat is muddy bare ground left by receding water levels, though around Taupo and Rotorua it grows in muddy ground within geothermal areas - and probably also in other Garden Bars in pubs.

Corticolous on tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides). Ascospores hyaline, strongly apiculate, up to 250 microns (if the tails are included). Seems to key here using Galloway (2007), except ascospores hyaline not brownish.

Images and determination by Andrew Marshall on the basis of specimens collected by Dan Blanchon, Peter de Lange and Andrew for a lichen diversity study.

I am posting this here in case someone has any bright ideas as to what this lichen is.

Currently it is believed that Thelotrema monosporum is not in New Zealand (de Lange et al. 2012) and that specimens so labelled are T. saxatile but we are not clear if there is truly the case or not - the late David Galloway passed away before his thoughts on the matter could be formally published. The decision taken by de Lange et al. (2012) reflected David's unpublished views (David was a Lichen Threat Listing Panel member).
