Unnamed limestone race of Viola cunninghamii. Once very common in the Castle Hill area, now extremely scarce and in decline due to aggressive competition from exotic weeds like Hieracium lepidulum, Pilosella officinarum, Leucanthemum vulgare, Agrostis capillaris and Festuca rubra subsp. commutata. Flowers only shown, leaves in this race are distinctly glaucous.

Is it E. crassum or E. petraeum? It seems to be forming a mat rather than upright and I don't see distinct internodes, which suggests E. crassum. I understand that both species occur at Foggy Peak. Probably difficult to tell from my photos and in a non-flowering specimen.

approx date; looks like female plant; these were once scattered along roadsides throughout the Canterbury Plains, but through the 1980s onwards they were progressively 'cleaned up', along with any other native remnants, and soils graded off. it was a great loss to the final crumbs of native vegetation on the Plains. Occasionally there are still a few of these grassland and shrubland species clinging to the fence lines where they escaped the grader blades. with cocksfoot and yarrow
