Not sure. Branches seem too wide spreading for brevicaudatus, but on the narrower side for subcaudatus. Few fls/glomerule suggests brevicaudatus, but I'm leaning latter for this one. Also saw other plant in area that matches better for brevicaudatus. Fen habitat.

Description

Another roadside colony of shining aster (Symphyotrichum firmum) near Mount Brydges, Ontario.

I suspect that some reports of willowleaf aster (S. praealtum) are based on misidentifications of this species, especially if the isodiametric leaf venation described in many keys is overemphasized. These photos show how S. firmum shares several features with S. praealtum, but note that the leaf blades are auricled (vs. attenuate in S. praealtum).

I have seen this species in another part of the Gorge before (farther east). I am uncertain of the specific identification. It is much paler than Great Blue Lobelia, but the lower petals seem broader and rounder than either the pale lobelia or the Downy lobelia (as shown in iNat file photos).
