Description

70 degrees at 9:20pm crossing the road. I wasn’t expecting to see any snakes tonight, the coolest temperature I’ve seen a snake at this summer is 74 degrees. And then... I saw a snake in the middle of my lane, stretched out perpendicular to me and crossing the road. I was able to straddle over it, and immediately turned around to go see what kind of snake it was. When I drove back, I didn’t see it, and I even parked and looked on the road. I didn’t see it, so I got back in my car and then with one last look, shined my flashlight over the road from within my car and saw a little balled up snake in the middle of the lane! I got out and slowly approached it. I thought maybe it was a boa or glossy snake based on the light color. Then upon a closer look, I’m like “A PANAMINT!!!!!” Sorry for no comparison, but it was about a foot long, and had a few buttons - enough to make a rattling sound. Anyways, I grabbed my hiking stick to try and move the snake off the road and it just wasn’t working. My stick is too thick around. And a car was coming, so I did my best to get the snake over to the bike lane and then I jumped in my car, so that I was not in the road, put my head down and prayed it wouldn’t get hit. The car slowed down beside me and parked, with a German Shepherd riding shotgun. The older gentleman driver inside asked, “is everything okay?” I shined my flashlight out and saw the baby snake was curled up, uninjured. I said, “Yes, everything is okay. There is a baby rattlesnake right here that I’m trying to move.” The man says, “Really? A baby snake? Did I run it over?” I reply, “No, it is safe. Do you have anything to help me move it?” And he says, “Yes I do! I will help you.” And he pulls over in front of me and brings a yardstick out!!!!! :D Relief flooded over me at this point. I grabbed my hard covered notebook out of the passenger seat and gave it to the man and he flipped the snake onto my notebook and put the yardstick behind the “shoulders” of the snake then I held a flashlight and we moved it off the shoulder of the road!!!! We must have shook eachother’s hands 5 times, thanking eachother for saving the snake, and me thanking him for pulling over and helping me. We ended up talking on the side of the road for awhile about all our wildlife stories. It was so awesome!!!!!

I was driving slow (10 mph) down a dirt road and this owl was either 1) under a bush or 2) in a hole during broad daylight next to the road and I scared it from its home and it flew out. High 80’s to 91 degrees at 4:26pm. 3,500+ feet elevation. No man made structures in this immediate vicinity, so it was definitely under a bush or in a hole. I’ve only seen long-eared owls, great horned owls, barn owls, and burrowing owls before. So this one was my first short eared owl. Pretty neat :)

Toward the end of my round through Paramount Ranch North I suddenly heard hissing and shrieking, then the alarm calls of a large flock of California Quails. Most of the Quails flew into the trees and shrubs. Then came alarm calls of Scrub-Jays and Crows. I looked around and caught a glimpse of two juvenile Bobcats climbing into a tree. One turned around instantly, the other stayed for a second… (In the lower right corner of the wide shot is a male Quail.
