Description
Chilean chess, Bromus berteroanus, White Mountains, elevation 1345 m (4405 ft). Native to South America, and debated whether native or introduced in North America, mostly in summer-dry climate zones on both continents. Populations in North America often seem well-integrated into the native vegetation and not invasive.

So weird to see a little stand of cypresses right along the road; I’d almost bet they were planted.
No cypresses come up as “seen nearby” in the suggestions. The leaves do not look the same as the Arizona Cypress’ which look almost barbed.
Plus the smooth bark looks very similar to the pictures’

No idea what it could be. It was coming up in a disturbed area thats being used as an illegal dumping spot. Soil was very fine and compact, almost like decomposed granite. There were a few others in the area, some having been ran over. Any attempts to locate a tuber/rhizome were fruitless. I thought maybe Aphyllon, but someone else mentioned that because its disturbed and a dumping ground it could be something non-native like a potato
