Could hear buzzing, like something was stuck, while I was checking the parsley. Thought maybe a bee was having difficulty surfacing due to the rain, but instead, I unearthed this interesting fly. 2nd one I've ever seen.

This small Asilid would not let me photograph him from the side, keeping a constant eye on me. I wish I had better pics. I would say he was only 6-7 mm in length. The female (also seen) was larger and had at least 4 pale bands on the abdomen when seen briefly from the side. I am going back to the location today in hopes of getting better pics. I am quite certain this is a new species for me. Would Atomosia puella be a good fit @robcannings ? The longish mystax white mystax hairs really popped out from a distance, which really helped me spot this guy. I don't know whether that is consistent with Atomosia.

@johnklymko @jhskevington @trinaroberts I thought at first this was S. bifasciata but it does not look right for that. Could this be S. slossonae? The bands are much more narrowly separated than in S. bifasciata and the bands are not as yellowish, i.e. more whitish. And this is a male anyway?
