buoy barnacle

Dosima fascicularis

Information 2

A fairly rare find in NZ although it is common in the northern hemisphere.

These clever barnacles build their own float - hence the name "buoy barnacle". They build the float to about golf-ball size and it can host a large number of offspring. Their happy pelagic life is cut short if/when they wash ashore somewhere.
