A few of these at the beach at the Kaituna River mouth. No other notable washup either here or at Maketu foreshore except the barnacles at https://inaturalist.nz/observations/raewyna which I haven't added to GoSea because I figure it's probably local flotsam.
in case anyone needed reminding not to mess with a wheke!!
Rare dans les chaluts à turbots à 930 mètres de profondeur.
Fieldwork with @ lloyd_esler, @ predomalpha and @ fiestykakapo.
Low intertidal, under an encrusted rock in a large rockpool. Huge individual.
I was surprised that these get so large. There was a pair quite close to shore, they would point towards me and when I tried to get close they shot off. Impossible to get close to.
Also I saw more smaller ones and there was a tiny one swimming with them, confirming the tiny ones are most likely the same species.
~25cm long
One bunch seen in one hour snorkel
Found still moving (barely) on the beach. 1.5 hours later (last 3 pics) it was no longer moving and looked like it had been split open by a gull. Perhaps M. maorum due to the white spots? The spots were much more obvious in person unfortunately.
Lots of them.
~3-5 cm long
Small red squid near the shoreline. Moved into and away from a rock wall. Shed some of its skin onto the rocks.
Freshly washed up on wild surf beach.
Shell is almost completely covered in Membranipora bryozoans (as pointed out by @lucas_dt).
There is also some encrustation of small goose barnacles.
