Dark eyed Junco crashed the photo shoot!
This looks like a juvenile BW to me. This one was foraging in some dense brush/riparian habitat along the Columbia River. Note long, bold white eyebrow; long curved bill; gray belly; dark barring on tail (second image).
Two observed. The rest of the covey (if they're all still together) may have already left the garden by the time I saw these ones. It seems they've got a tunnel under the fence by which they can leave now, which is good for them (no more slamming against the fence repeatedly until just chancing to fly high enough to go over), but I don't love it for the chickens. I'll have to go take a closer look at the hole
Pretty barred owl, very fluffy and well insulated. Seen in flight and then followed to the branches of a maple(?) tree. Appears solitary.
12' CBH hemlock in one of the only old growth sites in Columbia County. it is not protected property and could be logged in the future.
Massive 240' ft+ Douglas fir with a dead top. it is not the largest douglas fir in this stand. one of the only old growth sites in Columbia County. old growth was logged right up to the ridgeline where it sits. unstable and muddy hillsides. logging this patch of old growth would be a mistake if it happens.
found dead near a douglas fir along trail
