Description

We walked aorund a point and gave this kekeno a shock so it took off and dived into the water, only to find that the water receeded. Giving us a look of disgust (thrid photo) it continued to make its way to the ocean and disapperaed.

Ok - I am sure this is a stony coral and if I keep putting that sooner or later I will find one LOL

Looking in NZCMI Vol 1 I see that most of these live subtidally. The only onee that looks anything like this is Hoplangia durotrix - depth 5 - 15m and know distribution Northeastern NZ from the three Kings to East Cape

Found on a floating polystyrene bouy.
