I was very surprised to see this little fellow in a hole in the middle of a dry, grassy field. There are thousands of them along the creek, some distance away.

This is a Coastal Giant Salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus). The giant salamanders I'd seen previously were sizeable, but not exactly deserving the title. This one was different. Probably the biggest salamander I've ever seen in the wild.
