Description

Not at all sure that this is the correct genus but not sure what else to suggest to get beyond 'unknown'.
Several specimens growing in rock pool just below high tide level (photo 2).
From what I could make out the individual 'stems' seemed hollow with air inside. Some long and uniformly slender (like chives), others broader and more irregular (photos 5&6).

What

Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor)

Date

July 21, 2022 09:54 AM NZST

Description

This individual was found by a Places for Penguins volunteer on July 21st 2022 at 9:54am.

There was no flipper band, webtag present or microchip present. The bird was taken to Te Kōhanga/The Nest at Wellington Zoo to be necropsied.

Results showed no obvious evidence of a predator attack — with no puncture wounds and the injuries would have been very severe for an attack. There was an opening in the skin on the left side of the chest which the coracoid and scapula as well as the esophagus had herniated through as well as severe liver lacerations, a fractured spine, ruptured trachea and significant displacement of the internal organs with severe haemorrhage throughout the body.

The extent of her injuries point towards significant blunt force trauma which will most likely mean having been hit by a vehicle.
