Description

2:00pm, 87 degrees, Trout Creek park, sunny, blue skies, breezy, and wetland environment. Found this big snail amongst a pile of empty big snail shells around this pond. Probably the biggest fresh water snail shell I have ever seen. After doing a little research I would conclude that this Snail is a Florida Apple Snail, they are usually found around fresh water or wetlands. This source helped me identify this species.

Description

Visual Characteristics: This snail's shell was approximately 3 inches in diameter. It is spiral in shape, with a brown and gray color. The muscular part of the snail was hidden, as it had been recently touched by another wild animal. Closer pictures were not able to be taken due to larger obstructions.

Defining Characteristics: This snail is a protostome. There are distinct channels between the whorls of the shell, which is typical for a Florida Apple Snail.

Habitat: This snail was found right outside of a body of water in Lettuce Lake regional park in Tampa, FL. Apple Snails are typically found in freshwater areas, however they are able to withstand brackish conditions as well.
