October 28th Nature Walk

Today, I ventured the area around Boston College’s upper campus to find animals in the wild. Unfortunately, it was mot a very nice day, for it was cloudy and very damp. However, this did not hinder the variety of life that I would come across. First I observed a bird in a tree, but I could not get a close enough picture to positively identify it. Three wild turkeys were roaming the grass on upper campus, and they did not seem to be bothered by humans getting close to them. Next, I say an ant which was identified as a small honey ant by another iNaturalist user. Although it was not a nice day, the temperature was a perfect 55 degrees, which made for a cool but temperate nature walk. I also came across multiple Eastern Gray Squirrels. Moss was growing on some stone, and the orange-tipped sporophytes could be observed growing out of the green gametophyte. Lastly, I came across Common Blue Wood Asters. Overall, it was a very relaxing and serene nature walk filled with diverse life forms.

Nature Walk in Massapequa Preserve, NY

This weekend, while visiting home, I took a nature walk with my family in my hometown of Massapequa, New York. The weather was beautiful. It was about sixty-five degrees and partly cloudy, but mostly sunny. The sun shone through the leaves of the trees, and the lake in the middle was a dark blue. At first, I spotted a juniper and then some ferns. On iNaturalist, it suggested that the ferns were cinnamon fern. I also passed by a dark blue/violet flower, which I identified as a chicory. There was also an abundance of smaller pine trees in the area. I came across berries that were a variety of shades of blue, and iNaturalist identified them as porcelain berries. I also passed weeds with pinkish bristles, and white flowers that appeared to be swamp asters. Overall, it was a beautiful nature walk featuring a wide range of plant diversity.

Webster Conservation Area, 9/16/2019

On this nature walk, I first came across an interesting white flower with many small petals. I observed them to be from the Asters and Allies family. Deeper in the woods, I found ants on a flower, but I could not get a definite identification on the species of ant. The woods were hilly with many downed trees and large rock formations. Standing on top of one of the larger rocks provided for a beautiful view of the woods and the plant wildlife. Birds were chirping everywhere, and the sun shined through the trees. I then saw bracket fungi on a large tree branch on the ground. Also, between some rocks, there were paper wasps going to its nest. I observed about twenty of them one-by-one crawling into the tight crevasse. I also saw some rose buds and the common copperleaf, which has three leaves coming from various points on the stem. The weather was dry and about 60 degrees, and it was partly cloudy with a gentle breeze.
