Lewinskya & Orthotrichum:
- capsules on a very short seta

- loose, dull green tufts
- stems 1-2 cms long
- capsules with 8 pairs of pale outer peristome teeth (ribbed when dry)
- capsules concealed among the upper leaves
L. striata:
- capsules are smooth when dry
- 16 pairs of outer peristome teeth
- leaves are much sharper-looking
Ulota:
- capsules on long seta well above the leaves
- leaves that crisp untidily when dry
