Lewinskya & Orthotrichum:

• capsules on a very short seta
• capsules semi-concealed by the upper leaves
• leaves that lying neatly against the stems when dry

Orthotrichum:

• immersed capsule stomata

Lewinskya:

• superficial stomata

L. affinis:

• loose, dull green tufts
• stems 1-2 cms long
• capsules with 8 pairs of pale outer peristome teeth (ribbed when dry)
• capsules concealed among the upper leaves

L. striata:

• capsules are smooth when dry
• 16 pairs of outer peristome teeth
• leaves are much sharper-looking

Ulota:

• capsules on long seta well above the leaves
• leaves that crisp untidily when dry
