Not so public mothing events in DFW/North Central TX...

Soooo, we had a few mothing events in DFW on the books, and as expected, most are cancelled. There's one left that I know of. It's at Acton Nature Park on Saturday, July 25. It's not really a public event - instead, it's going to just focus more on collecting some data to compare it with the other year's events... If you're coming, we'll maintain social distance and wear masks when necessary.

LLELA mothing event on Thursday, August 6th!

Also, to celebrate @wildcarrot 's return to TX, I'd like to plan one at LBJ grasslands in August or so. :)

Anyone else know of others?

Also, let me know if you're planning/wanting to come to the Acton Nature Park. :)

I'll be at Acton!

Posted by k8thegr8 almost 4 years ago

Thanks, Sam, for letting me know! I'll be playing it by ear on going to this event based on my work schedule. I'll let you know when I know for sure.

Posted by lovebirder almost 4 years ago

Count on me to be at Acton!

Posted by annikaml almost 4 years ago

It's on my calendar, but I won't know for sure until it gets closer. Does anyone know if Dogwood Canyon on the 18th is confirmed cancelled?

Posted by kimberlietx almost 4 years ago

It's on my calendar, but I'm not sure if I can make it. I'll do my best!

Posted by lorainedg almost 4 years ago

@mikef451 If you are up for a drive...

Posted by kimberlietx almost 4 years ago

Never been to Acton! Count me in!

Posted by tadamcochran almost 4 years ago

@kimberlietx Thanks, that sounds really interesting, but I believe it is unlikely I can attend.

Posted by mikef451 almost 4 years ago

Thanks for the update. I will be putting out my moth light and do what I have in the past. May put up a few live feeds and stuff for a few nights. Still going to celebrate Moth Week just will do it at home. I don't think I will attend the one in Acton. So sad that we will not be able to get together this year. Really sad about it. Feels like forever since I have seen you guys. Stay safe my friends.

Posted by galactic_bug_man almost 4 years ago

I will definitely try to be there.

Posted by brentano almost 4 years ago

I'm interested!

Posted by bosqueaaron almost 4 years ago

Hey all! So, Saturday's still on at Acton. I've been asked that each person that comes has a mask -- you don't have to wear it the whole time, but we should try our best to social distance. I'll bring all of my gear, so there should be around 6 set ups -- if you have your own set up, feel free to bring it.

Also, another event just popped up! August 6th at LLELA! It's a Thursday evening, but they're curious about the prairie nocturnal insects. So, we'll set up some stations in the prairie. If you're able to come to that one, please let me know. :)

Aaaaand @wildcarrot is coming home one of these days, so we'll try to find a date to set up some mothing at LBJ grasslands. :)

Thanks, Sam. Does Acton have electricity?

Posted by tadamcochran over 3 years ago

Thanks Sam for the update. I will see what I can do no promises but I will try to get out there maybe in August and see what is what. Again no promises.

Posted by galactic_bug_man over 3 years ago

I'm on for LLELA. And of course, mask/social distancing.

Posted by annikaml over 3 years ago

Yeah, electricity at Acton, but not on the prairie at LLELA. :) We'll see what shows!

And if you're not able to make it, totally ok -- it's such a weird year. Of course, there will be LOADS of mothing events in the future. No doubt. :)

By the way, I keep forgetting to put in the link, but here are the top 500 documented moths in DFW:

I still plan to come to Acton. Not sure about LLELA but dang I would love to do that. Have to see if I can come in late to work next day.

Posted by brentano over 3 years ago

@sambiology What time does this kick off? Sunset is about 8:33 pm on Saturday.

Posted by lovebirder over 3 years ago

So each of these events you can show up whenever you'd like to! :) I'll likely be at each spot at around 7ish or so. Temps should be in the 90's, so niiiiice and cool. Bring a jacket. ;)

Posted by sambiology over 3 years ago

I'll be at both but I'll be late to LLELA. Yay!

Posted by k8thegr8 over 3 years ago

I'll be at Acton for sure and, at this point looks like LLELA also. In addition to that, I've got a nice, isolated 20 acre spot out here in Bosque County just begging to be "mothed". Let me know if anyone is up for that sometime soon. Here's the location.

I'll miss you all for the late July & early Aug mothing events, but I know you guys will find amazing stuff and can't wait to see it! We're planning on making the long drive back to Texas on August 13th. I can't wait to see everyone!

Posted by wildcarrot over 3 years ago

I'm not going to make it tonight, but LLELA, maybe... Find some good stuff!

Posted by lovebirder over 3 years ago

Hey all, just got word back from the LLELA folks -- it's still on for Thursday evening! :) We'll be doing the blacklighting in the prairie area towards the east side of the property... It's a bit different than the normal entrance spot. Essentially, it's off of 121 and Fish Hatchery Road, by Lewisville Independent School District Outdoor Learning Area (LISDOLA). Here's the google map spot:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lewisville+Independent+School+District+Outdoor+Learning+Area+(LISDOLA)/@33.0504249,-96.9380899,1051m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xd498ca320908b780!8m2!3d33.0503259!4d-96.9367189

There's a gate there that we'll meet. I'll be there at around 6:30/7 pm.

A couple things asked: if you are going to attend, let me know (either text or message: 214 215 5605), so I'll have a contact. Also, masks are required this time, so be sure to bring that. The LLELA folks will do a little facebook live video too, and there may be a few UNT folks as well.

No electricity there, but I'll have my 6 stations set up, and if you have or want to bring a portable one, feel free to (but you don't have to!). May not be too too many spots to hang sheets, so it may be a bit of 'ground sheeting!' :)

Woo hoo! Gonna be fun!

Posted by sambiology over 3 years ago

I'll be there, I'll txt you tomorrow. =)

Posted by k8thegr8 over 3 years ago

I will be there tonight!

Posted by lulubelle over 3 years ago

Sorry guys. I won't make it tonight. See ya'll on the next one!

Posted by tadamcochran over 3 years ago

We missed those of you that weren't able to make it to LLELA... It was mighty windy though, so only a few large moths showed up. Lots and lots and lots of leafhoppers did though!

The LLELA folks were mentioning that they wanted to do it again in a month or so, only a bit closer to the forest area. So, stay tuned for details on that!

Also, @bosqueaaron -- are there any days that you or that landowner would be ok with us doing some blacklighting down in your neck of the woods??? Saturday Aug 29 or Sat Sep 5 (just tossing those dates out there)??? Obviously all of my programs have been cancelled or are online now, so my calendar is relatively open, especially on weekends!!! :)

And yep, we need to find a date to do the @wildcarrot welcome back party at LBJ! :)

Posted by sambiology over 3 years ago

Unable to make it last night, but I am looking forward to the next one!

Posted by lulubelle over 3 years ago

@sambiology I'll check on those dates and let you know!

Posted by bosqueaaron over 3 years ago

Anyone up for some mothing on Saturday, Aug 29 at LBJ???

Hopefully it'd work with @wildcarrot . :)

Also, there's another LLELA mothing event planned for Friday, September 18th.

Let me know if you're interested in coming to either of these.

Posted by sambiology over 3 years ago

I'm putting them both on calendar now.

Posted by brentano over 3 years ago

Thanks for the updates and events! I'm really hoping to make one or more when I can.

Posted by lovebirder over 3 years ago

Unfortunately, I can't do the grasslands, I work 12 hr shifts that day & Sunday. 3 hr drive round trip, plus nothing time - I would get no sleep! Sept 18 might be a go, have to check my schedule.

Posted by lulubelle over 3 years ago

Ooh count me in for LLELA in September too!

Posted by wildcarrot over 3 years ago

I'm in for both.

Posted by annikaml over 3 years ago

I'm on call for the grassland night, but I can make the Sept 18 LLELA. Say hi to wildcarrot for me!!!
