City Nature Challenge Begins this Friday, April 30, 2021!

Hard to believe a year has passed and we are about to begin our 2nd international City Nature Challenge (https://citynaturechallenge.org/). We formally launched our iNaturalist efforts with our first CNC event last spring - right at the beginning of the pandemic. Nothing like a challenging challenge! Last year we managed to capture 2600 observations for the City, and came in fourth place in the country. Not bad for a newbie! This year we hope to surpass that.

This year over 400 cities are involved, and as with last year rather than a full-blown competition, we're focusing on a collaborative approach, as many cities have restrictions in place. Luckily here in BC we're urging people to connect with nature and here in Surrey safely get out and enjoy our local parks and greenspaces. Even if you can't range far, your backyard or balcony has a lot to offer. No space is too small to support life, and we want you to capture it via photo or audio recording and share it from April 30 - May 3.

We'd love it if you can help us share the event via your networks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/surreybcevents/permalink/2249687388498452/

And of course if you are in the Surrey area over the four days, snap and record away - it's your observations and identifications that makes this such an incredible event!

For those not able to get out to capture observations, we hope you can make some time over the review period from April 30 - May 9 to help with the ID's. Many curatorial voices make the data so much more valuable :).

Thank you so much for being part of helping us grow our understanding of Surrey's biodiversity.

This is awesome, I can't wait to make recordings and take photos to contribute during this time period!

On a separate note, is it possible to make a "Project" for North Creek Duck Pond the way you have for other parks in Surrey? I would love to be able to add more to data for this park, as since I made it a hotspot on ebird we have recorded over 70 species of birds there and there are plenty of other wildlife/flora species too! Very underrated Surrey Park :).

Good luck!

Andrew @culturenaturewildlife, I like your CNC spirit! I've been to the North Creek Duck Pond, it's an interesting spot. I'll follow up with you by email on that one.

Thank you Neil @naturewithneill, all the best for Richmond! At some point it would be great if Delta and Langley joined in and we could have a real south of the Fraser showdown!
