City Nature Challenge Begins this Friday, April 30, 2021!

Hard to believe a year has passed and we are about to begin our 2nd international City Nature Challenge (https://citynaturechallenge.org/). We formally launched our iNaturalist efforts with our first CNC event last spring - right at the beginning of the pandemic. Nothing like a challenging challenge! Last year we managed to capture 2600 observations for the City, and came in fourth place in the country. Not bad for a newbie! This year we hope to surpass that.

This year over 400 cities are involved, and as with last year rather than a full-blown competition, we're focusing on a collaborative approach, as many cities have restrictions in place. Luckily here in BC we're urging people to connect with nature and here in Surrey safely get out and enjoy our local parks and greenspaces. Even if you can't range far, your backyard or balcony has a lot to offer. No space is too small to support life, and we want you to capture it via photo or audio recording and share it from April 30 - May 3.

We'd love it if you can help us share the event via your networks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/surreybcevents/permalink/2249687388498452/

And of course if you are in the Surrey area over the four days, snap and record away - it's your observations and identifications that makes this such an incredible event!

For those not able to get out to capture observations, we hope you can make some time over the review period from April 30 - May 9 to help with the ID's. Many curatorial voices make the data so much more valuable :).

Thank you so much for being part of helping us grow our understanding of Surrey's biodiversity.

Counting down - 1 DAY 7 HOURS 41 MINUTES!!!

We are almost about to start Surrey's second CNC!

We'd love it if you can help us share the event via your networks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/surreybcevents/permalink/2249687388498452/ or https://www.surrey.ca/news-events/events/city-nature-challenge
And something we've learned from some recent research is that when it comes to iNaturalist observations for Surrey, birds remain one of the less frequently captured group of species. But they make up our largest set of biodiversity indicators. So, if you are in the Surrey area over the four days of the CNC, snap and record away - it's your observations and identifications that makes this such an incredible event!

For those not able to get out to capture observations, we hope you can make some time over the review period from April 30 - May 9 to help with the ID's. Many curatorial voices make the data so much more valuable :).

A huge thank you in advance for being part of helping us grow our understanding of Surrey's biodiversity.
And remember to adhere to Covid safety guidelines while getting all those awesome observations.

City Nature Challenge - Day 1

Four observations logged already and while we're off to a soggy start the weekend looks glorious! Looking forward to all the wondrous plants and critters to be added over the next four days.

Tell us about some of your favourite CNC spots this year.
