9 days until the launch of the City Nature Challenge!

Hello everyone! We are excited to be heading into our 3rd annual City Nature Challenge for the City of Surrey. This year the CNC will overlap with Party for the Planet and the launch of the Environmental Extravaganza!

New for this year will be the added competition from other cities, the most since we started participating in 2020. The Tri-cities (Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam), Delta, Richmond and other one-off events will be happening across Metro Vancouver. So far, we’ve held a spot nationally as one of the top five cities participating.

I know a lot of birders prefer to use eBird, thanks to some tech savvy connections through the CNC’s international organizers, participating cities we will be testing out a complementary platform called BioSmart to help compile observations from outside of iNaturalist. So we are going to see if bioSmart will be able to grab eBird data for us this year.

I am deeply grateful for all your efforts to conserve biodiversity locally, regionally, and beyond and am looking forward to seeing Surrey’s citizen science community shine at the CNC again this year!

Sincerely,

The City Nature Challenge is just over a week away!

In just over seven days City staff, residents and visitors will be in the throes of our biggest annual BioBlitz!

Sincerely,

CNC 2022 Day 1!

Day one of the CNC 2022. don't let the wet stuff this morning dampen your enthusiasm! Whether it's your backyard or one of our hundreds of parks, we hope you get a chance to get out there whatever the weekend has in store and connect to all the incredible plants and wildlife that the City has to offer!

CNC Way to go, we're off to a great start!

Thank you to all our community science troopers out there who are starting to put us on the map! Special nod to @creature_librarian and @david_dyck for bumping up the leader board :). I started out in south Surrey yesterday and will be wandering through city parks in the Fraser Heights area today and tomorrow.

I know there are mini BioBlitzes going on this weekend, as well as City youth program BioBlitzes, so looking forward to seeing all those observations getting uploaded over the coming week.

After a wet start the weather is on our side this weekend. And remember we're having a friendly competition with our neighbour City of Delta, who is participating for the first time this year.

P.S., try not to leave your observation "unknown"

One of our identifiers comments reminded me to remind everyone to try to categorize your observations to some degree rather than leaving it as unknown. "If you don't know the specific species you've observed, it's helpful to identify as far as you are confident when you upload it, even if it's only very coarse/general ( e.g. 'birds', 'mammals', 'plants'), instead of leaving an observation as 'unknown'. This way, it is more likely to come to the attention of people with specialised knowledge. More info from https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/help#coarse-ids: "Why do people keep adding 'obvious' IDs like 'Plants' or 'Fungi'? By adding a coarse ID of 'Plants' or 'Fungi' these identifiers are making it easier for other people to find your observation. Many experts use our taxonomic filters to focus on their taxon of expertise, so if you post an observation of a plant with no identification, these experts will never find it."

As part of the Herculean task of curating Surrey's iNaturalist observations, we have close to 4000 casual observations to try to improve like unknowns, or "something" or ones without even a photo. iNaturalist's recognition software isn't perfect and we know a number of incorrect ID's get magnified because they get verified to research grade and then show up as visually similar/seen nearby. Fortunately 90% of Surrey's 40,000 or so observations are research grade (~50%) or improving/need ID (~49%), which is lightyears better than when we started back in 2019, which is due in no small part to all the dedicated identifiers and observers out there!
