You Rock Surrey!

Way to go everyone, even with the fluctuating weather we are making a great CNC showing again this year!
Next steps:
1) Make sure you upload your observations by May 8th
2) Please do help with ID where you feel you can

Right now we are sitting with about 60% of CNC observations to reach research grade (38% already there!). Even better we only have ~3% casual observations.

We are also partnering with BioSmart https://www.biosmart.life/ this year to use some cool coding tech to merge eBird data into our finally total for next week.

Can't wait to see how things tally up for the rest of the week!

One more day to add your observations

Just a reminder to upload your observations from April 29-May 2nd asap for them to be counted. CNC organizers will be starting to tally data late tomorrow for the big reveal on Monday!

And a big shout out to all you folks helping with the ID's, so grateful for everyone's efforts!

coming down to the wire!

If you're like me you are squeezing in your last observations as the CNC officially comes to an end today! Here are the comparative stats (with hours to go) between last year and this year:

2021: 3,893 observations, 580 species, 407 identifiers, 96 observers
2022: 1,643 observations, 406 species, 167, identifiers, 75 observers

All in all though we did a fantastic showing for our 3rd year out (we beat Abbotsford which is a biodiversity hotspot ;).

Everyone who contributed to the CNC this year should be proud!

Thank you everyone, CNC 2022 is a wrap!

Just received the final rollup from the CNC organizers:
Here are the collective results:
Observations: 1,694,877
Species: 50,176+, including more 2,244 than rare/endangered/threatened species
Observers: 67,220
Most-observed species globally: Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) - last year it was the Mallard duck ;).

"This marks two years in a row we've made more than one million observations in four days. That’s a reflection of all the time and hard work all of you have put into making the CNC happen in your community."

If you would like to check out what all this looks like in an infographic you can see it here:

And mark you calendars for next year's City Nature Challenge: April 28 - May 1, 2023

On behalf of the City of Surrey, thank you everyone and looking forward to seeing our community of citizen scientists continue to grow.
