APPENDIX: TAXONOMIC AND DIAGNOSTIC NOTES
Shen & Leschen (2018) separate A. chathamensis from the very variable species A. foveolata mainly by the key character 'Tergite IV (visible tergite I) with discal carinae longer than half length of tergite IV' (in description), 'Discal carinae as long as or longer than half length of tergite IV' (in key), and 'Both A. chathamensis and A. electrica can be readily separated from the similar-looking species A. foveolata by having the discal carinae longer than half the length of tergite 4' (comments section in description). However, this character is nowhere explained properly or illustrated. In at least one place (p. 534), they appear to confuse tergite IV (visible tergite 1) with visible tergite 4, i.e. 'Sexes dimorphic with males having tergite IV and sternite IV visible'. Therefore, the supposed distinction from A. foveolata requires clarification and verification.
