Description

Planted circa 1995 by Tony Tantum (see series of photos) The balance of images are 2018 satellite imagery showing some free standing vetiver hedgerows and also images showing how vetiver has acted as a pioneer species allowing native trees and shrubs to establish. The original plantings were all bare excavated soil in preparation of industrial buildings

Description

Zoomie Robert has been planting vetiver on his sugar estate for erosion control and drainage stabilization for at least 30 year. Photos (recent in 2019) show contour hedges and satellite view of one part of his farm with vetiver hedge protection. The C. zizanioides on this farm is sterile, 'known as "Natal" vetiver. Also included are images of vetiver on this estate taken by John Greenfield when he visited it in 1995

2018 photos. Rather poor growth showing signs of cold temperatures. This is a north facing slope, and is marginal for vetiver. Received and planted (@2’ apart)/24 starter plants obtained from Doug & Lisa Richardson of Carpinteria Ca., into the ground- on a 50’ ridge scarp (at point of repose) after a severe landslide of a 100’ + high ridge overlooking highway 101 regular watering early morning, late evening - ph appropriate fertilizer - local product “SeaCrop”- (winter-Feb/Mar 2017) fertilizer/compost/mulch/yearly-late September - trimmed back to 2’ the first two autumns/no trimming since September 2017 - still growing!! These plants originated from Sunshine, Louisiana, thence to Pomona, CA, thence to Carpenteria CA thence to South Bend WA. This cultivar is sterile. Marginal area

This 2 year old plant was grown by Dr. P.K.Yoon of the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia. There are two images: (1) the roots of a single plant and (2) a linea section through a line of vetiver plants (depth shown about 1 meter).
