What

Freshwater Sponges (Family Spongillidae)

Observer

invertebratist

Date

September 20, 2021 03:50 PM NZST

Description

A freshwater sponge from Oakley Creek, Auckland.
Found under a basalt in the fast flowing part of Oakley Creek.

My first thought was freshwater bryozoan but I could see that this was made of fragments of silica which is a typical feature of a sponge.
I am not sure if this is a native species.
There is a very similar species, Ephydatia mulleri in United States so possibly this is it or its relative, which might be introduced.

Apparently this species is first on Inaturalist and also this is the second observation of this family from New Zealand in Inaturalist community.

What

Mountain Ribbonwood (Hoheria glabrata)

Observer

kowhaiwhai

Date

September 18, 2021 03:50 PM NZST

Description

Unknown. There is an umbel type structure to the inflorescence. Photos include bark. It appears the flowers have mature seeds (flowers ?) which are germinating or perhaps they have an elongated style. This group of small trees, devoid of any leaves but showing leaf buds on smooth brown branchlets was an open area of higher light levels. The trunk was covered in moss which when removed reveals a warty textured bark.
