Honey Mushrooms (Genus Armillaria)Observer

This amazing show of mushrooms was around the base and root lines of a tawa tree. The tree came down in a storm later on in the year. I'm not sure if the fungus weakened the tree, or the tree was already under stress that allowed the fungus to attack it. When the fallen tree was cut up into sections to remove it off the track you could see how the tree had tried to make a barrier to protect itself from this pathogenic fungus.

Taken while pre-feeding robins, for future release on Mt Taranaki. Highly likely on of the birds now resident on Mt Taranaki.
