Description

Just the one bird, but behaving like it might be nesting. Such a busy spit to nest on. I'll go check again the next time I'm up north.

Description

Lots of penguin footprints at Tongaporutu. No dog footprints on the spit, but lots on the true left bank. Spotted this guy nesting in the caves. Would be pretty vulnerable to dogs.

Description

Looks like dotterel pair might try to nest at Mohakatino this year (they didn't last year).

Looks like it had been a busy weekend with dog and human prints leading up into the nesting area. Might have to rope the area off if the dotterels stick around.

Description

King tides and big swells earlier in the week had smashed the spit and there was hardly any driftwood in the nesting area. There was one obvious pair with the male protecting a very exposed scrape that had no eggs in it yet. In addition to the pair there were two other dotterels, one of which was the most chubby I've ever seen!

Description

One pair and one other that was not welcome by the pair. Might have been a youngster from last year? Was well coloured up.

One of the pair (female? last photo) had duller plumage than the other (male?).

Not sure if the smashed egg shell belonged to the dotterels or not.

Strong winds, king tides and big swells on the few days previous.
