What

Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)

Observer

Date

Description

Crows were raucously flying over this raptor that was sitting quietly in a nest that seemed to not have the breadth for a raptor this size. (Deep but way too narrow) He then flew across a roped off area to a thorny tree on tree hill trail where he perched for about 5 minutes. He was continually mobbed by crows until he departed flying NNE through the urban forest toward Riparian View / Michelson and disappeared from view. I have about quite a few pics of him, the nest, perched and in flight. He was no longer present when I returned 3 hrs later- seemed like a migrant intruder. Wing span looked bigger than Cooper’s hawk closer to size of red tailed hawk; he had long yellow legs and cere; dark brown head and body; rufous underwing coverts seen in flight pics, long wings w rounded ends
