Maui's Copper (Lycaena edna)Observer
johnsscDescription
When first seen, feeding on flower heads of oregano (Origanum vulgare), in suburban garden. A little tattered, but this is the first copper butterfly I've seen in the city in the 40+ years I've lived in Palmerston North!
The same individual hung around the same small patch of garden for three or more hours, so a couple more photos added.
This observation is dedicated to the memory of John Tāne Christeller (died 26 Dec 2023), a good friend and close neighbour, who many years ago planted Muehlenbeckia in his garden in the hope of attracting copper butterflies.
