What
Typical Crane Flies (Superfamily Tipuloidea)Observer
paul_wardDescription
We were exploring in a small stream in Polhill Reserve to see if any bush dragonflies had emerged (they were reported to have been present historically). The small stream (a foot or two wide) was pretty dry, but had a trickle of running water through the mud. We found this larvae (?). It was about an inch and a half long, and had what looked like a single antennae (?) poking out of one end (that extended about the same length as the body). It was actively wriggling. What is this?

Orange Ichneumonid Wasp (Netelia ephippiata)Observer

What is this insect? I'm pretty sure I've seen casts of it's shell about. The wings are quite silvery. Photographed inside a house at te horo beach 26 Jan
What
Airplants (Genus Tillandsia)Observer
paul_wardDescription
Small plant with short spiky grey silvery green leaves 6-10cm, with iris-like flowers. It's growing in a piece of driftwood, hung on the outside east side of the house. The house is near the beach. Is it a native? Or? It possibly came from Alistair Turnbull's Otaki native nursery, but can't be sure of this.

Tīeke (North Island Saddleback) (Philesturnus rufusater)Observer
paul_wardDescription
A single unbanded tieke, seen around a metre or so in front of me while checking traps in Polhill Reserve, adjacent to Zealandia Sanctuary. It let me know it'd clocked my presence with it's jackal-like alert call and was happy to forage in the kotukutuku and mahoe canopy above me for 10min or so.
