Orange-ball Tree Buddleja globosa

Observer

Date

Description

Probably - flowers not seen but I don't know of any other naturalized species in New Zealand with globose inflorescences. Cultivated in nearby hospital grounds. This observation of a few shrubs growing in wasteland above the Oue (Crispan's Stream), which almost certainly arose from discarded garden waste derived from hospital plantings.

Silverleaf Cotoneaster Cotoneaster pannosus

Date

Description

A single planted and well-tended shrub of this serious environmental pest species (in New Zealand). I had thought this was Cotoneaster glaucophyllus which is naturalized on the Chatham Islands and an unwanted pest species there. However, the abaxial leaf surfaces of mature leaves in this plant are uniformly covered in tomentum - not a feature of the mature leaves of C. glaucophyllus (Glenny 2017), so of the Cotoneaster found in New Zealand this specimen fits C. pannosus best. I have asked that this plant be destroyed. I saw no signs of naturalization in the vicinity of this shrub.
