Description

Wild saplings and seedlings growing in rank grassland and fossiliferous glauconitic limestone along the coast north of Waitangi and south of the Mangatukurewa.

Unfortunately now a locally common naturalised tree around Waitangi. I first noted it naturalising in 1996 - as occasional seedlings along the Waitangi Wharf road - but since then it has become very common along the coastline north and south of Waitangi. A shame, whilst this is a beautiful tree in New Zealand it has no part in the indigenous ecosystems of the Chatham Islands, where it poses a serious threat to the flora of the islands.

However, pohutukawa is common in gardens on the islands where it is valued for its ability to tolerate the ever present wind (so an excellent wind shelter), and attractive flowers.

Because of this trying to get pohutukawa controlled as a pest plant on the islands is, at best, extremely 'difficult'

Description

One of the few places on Rekohu where this pest plant has become established. Plants grow on rocky headlands and outcrops of fossiliferous glauconitic limestone overlaid by tuff along the coast north of Waitangi to the mouth of the Mangatukurewa. Some of these plants have spread from deliberate plantings made near a Public Toilet block but others are derived from the dumping of garden waste into the Mangatukurewa and Oue Streams.

The largest infestation grows amongst Brachyglottis compacta × B. greyi (second image here) - also see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/18985535 itself established from deliberate plantings and garden waste.

Description

Brachyglottis compacta × B. greyi - one of two places on Rekohu where this horticulturally derived hybrid has escaped from deliberate plantings - spread is vegetative (the other site is the Chatham Airport).

An occasional plant of islander gardens.

This hybrid constitutes a potential threat to the endemic rautini (Brachyglottis huntii) because it can form hybrids with in (seen these in cultivation in New Zealand).

At this site shrub are common on coastal outcrops of fossiliferous glauconitic limestone - also covered in Agapanthus.

These escapees derive from garden waste discarded at the mouth of the Oua and Mangatukurewa streams, and also from waste dropping from deliberate plantings of these plants made at the nearby Public toilets in the early 2000s.
