Description

Trentepohlia aurea is by far the most reported species for California. However, the degree to which identifications are made to species level is almost certainly a case of people identifying theirs (and other's) observations by what is considered the most "likely", a situation which then feeds on itself as more ID's are added based on reporting frequency.

Rindi et al. (2018) sampled Trentepohlia from Point Lobos, Monterey County through the San Francisco Bay region and discovered there were two species: T aurea, by far the most abundant, which was found growing on a wide range of substrates, and the significantly less common T. abietina, which was found on tree bark.

This colony was growing on the branches of a cypress

Without more detailed information, I believe the most prudent course is to leave this observation at the level of genus.
