What
American Woodcock (Scolopax minor)Observer
sedgeheadDescription
I don't normally add observations without photos, but it is hard to get good photos of woodcocks. I was walking the dogs on the Mountain Home campus of Arkansas State University along Dodd Creek and the adjoining floodplain. We scared up four to nine woodcocks in groups of four, two, and three. The four may have flown to where I saw the groups of two and three. The two may have flown to where I saw the group three. All this happened in the mown area, former cow pasture, that is now managed as a park-like area with scattered trees and which is frequently mown with bushhogs.

Dekay's Brownsnake (Storeria dekayi)Observer
sedgeheadDescription
Occasionally seen here in the city in my garden. This one was lucky and ended up intact in my shovel while turning over compost. I saw no injuries to the snake and was very happy about that. The compost had been turned over about 30 days ago, so there were plenty of places for a snake to hunt.
