Here is mussel spat - 1 - 3mm in size, that washes up on the Tohe and is collected to provide 75% of the green lipped mussels in NZ.
A couple of months ago there was a film of the collectors using heavy machinery to collect the sea weed for the spat, and after protests last week they collected with a trailer and shovel. This was acceptable because the concern over the heavy machinery that was going in and out of the water, was that they were running over tuatua and toheroa beds.
