Description

Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae (kererū, New Zealand pigeon, wood pigeon) feeding on the berries of a Cordyline australis (tī kōuka, cabbage tree, Torquay palm) in the evening light, which really brought out its colouring.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens, New Zealand.

This is a focus stack of two images, in order to maintain the feather detail of the body as well as focus on the eye/beak.

Four-striped Digger Bee (?) feeding on the Lantana flowers. These guys hovered a lot, and although they moved fast (and seemed a bit uncommon / shy when I did find them), I was able to get some shots of them in midair.

Description

Macroglossum stellatarum (Hummingbird hawk moth / Moro-sphinx / Sphinx colibri) feeding from a flowering Lantana bush in Morocco.

I only got the one chance, and only for a minute - so happy with the result. Since these moths are migratory (fly to EU/UK in summer), I had plenty more chances to observe these awesome creatures - we do not have anything like this back home in NZ.

Description

Macroglossum stellatarum (Hummingbird hawk moth / Moro-sphinx / Sphinx colibri) drinking nectar from a lantana flower (in flight). Although taken next to a butterfly house, these were only present wild. Hunawihr, Haut-Rhin, France.

My previous photo of this species was taken in its native Morocco. This specimen, as with others I saw all over France, has arrived as part of its migratory behaviour during the summer (they migrate from Africa to all over Europe).

I think/hope that is what these are, as we've gathered some for eating.

Haven't tried any yet - and not completely sure I have the right thing.

The ones we gathered have a white stem with streaks of brown - but no signs of a shroud as some images of this species show.

Given these were found in Bottle Lake Forest, under Pinus Radiata. Any similar looking species to look out for that might be inedible (or even toxic)?
