What

Tasmanian Lacewing (Micromus tasmaniae)

Observer

Description

Based on one find in the past, I think this may be a brown lacewing (Hemerobiidae) cocoon. It may even be Micromus tasmaniae. I think you can just see some jaws poking out of the end-on image. It was found in the base of a potted plant that I was ditching.

Tasmanian Paralysis Tick (Ixodes cornuatus)

Description

Whoa I've loaded some gross stuff today. Despite searching, we missed the fact that the dog had picked up this tick. He'd been very unhappy about something on his back end and we'd searched and searched but failed to find it. It dropped off on the carpet at home. I'd seen that the cat and dog were fascinated by something on the carpet, but I took a while to investigate. Yuck!

Flies (Order Diptera)

I definitely took one for the team to get this photo. There was a dead wallaby on the beach and I decided that I really neglect all carrion insects, so I gave it about 30 seconds of my tolerance to get a photo of this unobliging maggot and a carrion beetle. I have no idea which fly, and it didn't give me a chance to see its head. I was leaning over the carcass for this. YUCK! My guess is a blowfly.

I love these big Rutilia flies. We were kind of lucky in that it got cold when I was out, and there were drops of rain, so the fly actually sat still on the path. They usually take off like rockets.

Or possibly another poo mimic. This looks along the lines of Ioptera but I'm not confident as I can't see little crests behind the head.

This one was by far the most interesting of all the moths I uploaded in this bunch. It was running around, in daylight on a trunk amongst a stack of ants. I couldn't get decent photos due to the speed, and size. I also can't find an ID. I thought it would be easy with the eye spot wing flange. These lead me to Tineidae.

I think this was still alive...just.... It was on a Eucalypt trunk and had a beautiful blue sheen. I don't think I've seen one before. It was a bulky wasp, maybe around the 1cm mark (if memory is right!).
