Growing along sides of stream and in adjacent open pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) forest. Abundant. Plants with a shortly creeping rhizome (exposed above soil), often forming small trunks up to 0.8 m tall. Forming dense patches of interconnected 'trunked' plants. Probably the same race as that seen in the geothermal areas of the Central Volcanic Plateau.
