Forest clearing on Tamahunga summit. Aggregation of tunnels in clay soil in c.2m square area of bare gound/short grass.

Twenty to thirty wasps could be seen flying over the 'colony' at a time. Many were carrying leaf beetles Adoxia vulgaris into burrows (wasp ID based largely on identity of prey species).
