I initially thought this was a coastal copper from a distance, but seeing the photos knew it wasn't. I had alook at http://nzbutterfly.info and the photo that looks closest to the back (second photo) is a boulder copper, but that range is only up as far as volcanic plateau.

Any help in getting a species ID would be most appreciated :)
