Colchester Bog was a good spot to bird today, with plenty of birds observed along with some other wildlife including garter snakes and chipmunks. While in the bog, I spotted multiple Northern Cardinals, and I continued to hear more throughout the walk in the surrounding woods. Also abundant were Black-capped Chickadees, some of which coming very close to me (I used the spishing technique, which seemed to work fairly well). The beautiful song of a Song Sparrow was clear to hear, even though there were Cardinals and Chickadees making noise as well. Other species observed while in the bog area include two Canada Geese which I heard from a distance, as well as an American Crow (which I also only heard). In the surrounding woods area (and field just outside of the woods), I observed two American Robin, 4 Tufted Titmice, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 1 House Sparrow, and 3 Downy Woodpeckers.
Spotted three Northern Cardinals together right as I was exiting the boardwalk over the bog. Throughout the rest of the walk, I heard five additional Northern Cardinals.
There were many Black-capped Chickadees both within the bog area and the surrounding woods. Their songs and calls were loudly ringing throughout the area, and it was easy to spot them as many of them got very close to me.
While out on the boardwalk over the bog, I very clearly heard the song of a Song Sparrow.
I spotted one American Robin in the woods just outside of the bog and another in the field close to the playground as I exited the woods.
I was able to hear a crow from a slight distance while in the bog.
Canada Geese were heard from the woods near the bog (observed while I was in bog).
Multiple Tufted Titmice were observed, all either on the ground or fairly low to the ground.
I heard a White-breasted Nuthatch call while in the woods just beyond the bog.
A House Sparrow call was easy to pick out while exiting the bog.
There were multiple Downy Woodpeckers in the woods outside the bog. Two of them were on the same tree, while another was nearby on a different tree, still in the same section of woods.
