How cool! I have just wondered the same, whether different species of hermit crabs prefer different species of shells and wondered how to research that - and here is a project! So I will add my few observations. :-)
@susanhewitt : what will fit them is probably dependent on their anatomy - Yesterday I found a "rare" crab in a "rare" shell - that got me thinking...
Added an observation of a different type of crustacean--an amphipod, of all things--that wears snail shells in a similar manner to hermit crabs. Would that be allowed in this project, or should it be removed as it's not a hermit crab?

Thanks, it's a good idea, well done!
Which shells hermit crabs chose depends of course to a large extent on what is available that will fit them.

To a great extent it depends on how big the hermit crab is.
yes, but maybe big is not only about the length of the crab, but about the size of the opening of the shell, or how big or small the whorls are.
