The Elusive Nine-Spotted Ladybug

The Nine-spotted Ladybug, Coccinella novemnotata, is the official State insect of New York. It has been prized for its ability to control other insect pests, namely aphids, in agricultural fields and other landscapes. Unfortunately, populations of the Nine-spotted Ladybug have been in decline and scientists do not understand why.

Participating with the Lost Ladybug Project, an initiative led by Cornell University, BPCA has released and reintroduced this species of ladybug back into the landscape. In the past couple weeks we have released 1,100 Nine-spot Ladybug larva in our parks. Now many of the larva are entering the pupa stage or emerging as adults.

You can help us learn more about these powerful and ecologically important insects by taking pictures of the ladybug larva, pupa, or adults and uploading it to this page! Below is a great identification guide for finding Nine-spot ladybugs provided by the Lost Ladybug Project. Happy hunting for the elusive Nine-spotted Ladybug and report your findings!
