Birders fear for life of rare duck spotted in Humboldt County.

Since Dec. 20, word has spread quickly via social media and email lists that a common pochard – a “mega rarity” in the birdwatching world – is mingling with several hundred other ducks on Freshwater Lagoon, about 45 miles from the California-Oregon border.

Citizen-scientists document bird life at the Albany Bulb.

Jutting out into San Francisco Bay, the Albany Bulb and Neck has received a lot of attention for its human uses: a onetime garbage dump, onetime homeless encampment, and the first section of shoreline targeted to be a part of today’s McLaughlin Eastshore State Park.

Bird Researcher Expands Knowledge About Reserve’s Kestrels.

Kestrels are a fixture among the birds on the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve Opens a New Window. adjacent to campus.

Though they are not endangered, the small falcons’ population has declined by 60 percent in California over the past half-century because of changes in land usage.
