Campsite reservations for California state parks, including campsites at the always popular Monterey beaches, Santa Cruz Mountains and Sierra Nevada, open up at 8 a.m. on March 1. Those reservations cover Labor Day weekend and beyond (and any summer sites that are still available).

“Liftoff was somewhere around 9:15 with what we were estimating to be about 800 birds in three kettles, all real close to each other,” Mark Stratton reported on the San Diego Region Birding feed. “It was awesome. When the birds went streaming off, we followed and had them right over our heads.”

After a long fall and winter, a pair of bald eagles is back in the Sauces Canyon nest on Santa Cruz Island.
The Central Sierra Audubon Society will count, help house and watch birds in April.
