On 10 September eight member of the Canterbury Botanical Society spent 6 hours in the 31 ha Tiromoana Scenic Reserve.
There is no sign and the only access is through the stream and over the fence along a 120 m strip bordering the Mt Cass road. Half the reserve is old cocksfoot pasture. Even the name is confusing. It is not the Transwaste Tiromoana Bush reserve, nor the Tiromoana walkway, nor Tiromoana farm. It is never visited and there are no tracks, apart from an old farm track. All but one in the party had not been through the reserve before.
It really is the preserve of bush, birds, and beetles.
On the day we visited the kowhai was in flower and korimako and riroriro were common.
